Youth Ministry "How To's"

Below are listed a number of simple "How to" guides to use as a starting point. Contact our Youth Enabler for further assistance.

FIRST Training

FIRST Training is an initiative aimed at those in high school years 11,12 & 13 who are beginning to take on leadership responsibilities in our churches and youth ministries. It consists of two 3 day retreats run regionally by CCCNZ Youth at the invitation of churches in a given area.

The training programme consists of:

  • Teaching: By the national youth enabler with the use of participant workbooks. All content is leadership focussed with a biblical foundation.
  • Group interaction: Small group discussion times where participants build community and grow in understanding.
  • Personal reflection: Directed solo time and journalling.

Youth pastors and key leaders invite selected young people to attend and come with them, discussing content and helping them reflect on what they learn throughout the retreat.

The curriculum covers leadership, skills, self awareness and personal devotion. We'll have more information available at the Regional Youth Summits, but you can view a full outline of the curriculum using the link on the right.

Dates for 2019

  • Upper North Island: Camp Whakamaru 9-11 July 2019
  • Lower North Island: Forest Lakes, Otaki 16-18 July 2019
  • South Island: Dates and venue to be advised.

Sustainable Practices for Youth Ministry

When a church has employed or volunteer youth workers they have a responsibility to care and support them as best as they are able. The youth departments of most major denominations in NZ have agreed upon seven sustainable practices which contain beliefs and promises about the principles of employing a youth worker. The sustainable practice documents can be downloaded on the right. For each Sustainable Practice there is a narrative, questions, action points and resources.

We suggest that church leaders in consultation with key youth leaders, work through the practices, reflecting on what the church is already doing and coming up with commitments to improve the sustainability of their church’s youth ministry. Our youth enabler, Murray Brown can help and advise in the process if required.

Training in Safe Practice

As churches we need to do all we can to ensure our youth leaders are trained in safe practice. Using the link on the right, you can download a free training manual for use with your leaders. Alternatively you can sign them up to study the material online using their phone or device in their own time, thus ensuring every leader has undergone the training and giving you written verification that this is the case.

Ministry to Millennials

Checklist for a New Year

When a youth ministry gets underway for another year there are a number of things we as leaders need to attend to. Download the checklist on the right and make sure you don't miss anything.

CCCNZ are able to assist you in fulfilling all these tasks. Contact Murray or click on some of these links below to see ways he can help via his role with YouthTRAIN:
